The Little Tern (Sterna albifrons)
The smallest and most agile diver of the coast; a jewel glistening on the sea with its snow-white wings and yellow beak.
In the vast beaches of Belek and at the special points where river mouths meet, it is possible to encounter the Little Tern (*Sterna albifrons*), gliding through the sky like a snowflake. This smallest member of the tern family can be easily distinguished from other species by the characteristic white patch on its forehead and its bright yellow bill with a black tip. Hanging effortlessly over the water and diving vertically in an instant to catch its prey, this skilled fisher uses Belek’s abundant water resources both for feeding and for nesting on the coastal dunes.
Little Terns are social birds that prefer to live in colonies, and because they build their nests directly on the sand, their breeding process is particularly delicate. BETUYAB is the greatest supporter of all conservation efforts aimed at protecting these fragile birds’ breeding grounds, balancing human impact on coastal ecosystems, and ensuring the sustainability of natural life. Walking along the shore, watching these tiny but brave birds dive at lightning speed into the water, allows one to appreciate how fragile and yet mesmerizing Belek’s biological heritage is. These swift and elegant residents of the sky are among the most vivid symbols of the unbreakable connection between the deep blue of the Mediterranean and the golden sands.
