A Gift from the Ancient World: Loggerhead Sea Turtles
For millions of years, they have followed the tides of the sea—the most loyal and ancient guests of Belek’s beaches.
Gliding from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean onto the golden-yellow beaches, the Caretta Carettas, or loggerhead sea turtles, are living relics that stretch from the ancient world to the present day. Having existed on Earth for approximately 100 million years, Belek’s shores serve as one of the most important and sensitive nesting sites in the world for these magnificent creatures. Each year, between May and August, female turtles instinctively return to the very beaches where they were born, burying their eggs deep in the sand to ensure the continuation of their species. Belek’s soft sandy shores provide the perfect terrain for hatchlings to make their way to the sea under the guidance of the moon after an incubation period of about two months. BETUYAB is a steadfast supporter of projects that protect this endangered species, including marking nesting sites to shield them from human activity and managing coastal lighting so as not to disorient the turtles. Witnessing a tiny Caretta hatchling quietly making its way to the sea is one of the purest moments to feel how ancient and fragile a miracle nature truly is. Belek seamlessly brings together the comforts of modern life with the life cycle of these ancient sea travelers, continuing to showcase one of the most beautiful examples of global biodiversity.
